The Mother of Us All

By Linda Iles
With Quote by Olivia Robertson

"I love the old word for Individuality - Singularity! (Heresy usually!) The Body of Nuit is made of Singularities - from Atoms to Gods. The more Singular we are, the more we relate to others because of the Star Essence that joins us all with Nuit. So the more eccentric, odd, different, alien, heretical, peculiar each of us is - the more we can relate to the Mother of ALL oddities. She's given birth to us that way. No snowflake is like another. The Mother of the Sun is in us all, Human and Animal. She is Nuit-Isis of the Stars and Snowflakes!" - written by Olivia Robertson in a letter dated January 6, 2001

The role of Honorary Secretary of the Circle of Isis and serving on the Circle of Isis website staff as website manager, puts one in a special and privileged position to be in touch with FOI members throughout the world. The scope of personality, experience and choice of spiritual path varies from one member to another, though I do see a commonality. Every member seeks or has gone through a period seeking clarity of heart, clarity of mind and clarity of spirit. This is a natural progression because the Path of the Goddess is nearly always 'alternative' to the spiritual path of our parents and our community. Breaking away from the tradition one was brought up in requires a certain amount of courage. Daughters and sons of the Goddess encounter a process of 'refinement' of the soul, discovering a path that honors what Olivia Robertson has referred to as the 'maternal' values of Deity, practicing Compassion, Peace and Loving Kindness to All Beings. Our bodies, our minds, our spirits, our homes become holy places; and we recognize the unique expression engendered by a spark of Divinity within each person. We learn to treat ourselves and every other living being with respect and love. The earth is the body of our Mother, every living creature upon it is the child of our Mother.

Anything I can share with you, is, of course based on my own experience which has colored my perspective. I recognize we are all different.  But for me, being a daughter of the Goddess means doing the right thing, which can be the hardest thing in some circumstances.  It means reaching out beyond one's own desires, beyond the usual scope of one's own perceptions and reactions to life and the situations that can come up. It means really acting like the Goddess that one so loves and dedicates themselves to. It means practicing forgiveness, it means letting go, it means reaching out in love, even when our very human common sense says "What are you doing?" and it turns our guts inside out.  It means being like the Fool in the tarot - walking happily towards what seems to be certain disaster, when that quiet voice that one should always listen to tells one to trust and forge on ahead.

And you know what?  That quiet voice of the Great Mother has never been wrong. She has never let me down. I know She won't let you down either.
